hi out there,

I have a blue tang (paracanthurus hapatus), the black lines that frame the top and middle of the body have expanded quite a bit recently. From the middle of the body upwards, there is virtually no blue coloration left. Is this a result of lateral line disease, or does this happen to these fish as they age? i.e. genetic prediposition.

My hippo/regal/blue tang goes through color change phases every now and then.

When he gets up in the morning and when he is super stressed (like during tank cleaning hour), "Leroy" is a very pale blue. During the cleaning, he hides out under some rocks. During dinner he is a deep blue.

Dave - I think you need to look for any stress inducing elements in your tank - a nasty tankmate, lack of hiding spaces or possibly poor wayer conditions.

I have had Leroy for over 10 years now, so I do not believe it has anything to do with age.

These tangs should not be fed vegetable matter exculsively. They also need meaty foods like Formula 1 & Prime Reef, both by Ocean Nutrition. Is your getting a rounded diet? That may be another item to look at.
