You know not for nuthin, or to start a flame war, but Harrison Nailed it: It's free.
If we were all paying 10 bucks a year (or something) for our membership, the fine folks that run the board could prolly buy a quad processor Linux box attached to the end up a pair of T3's... Unfortunately they're not millionaire's, and hosting services are pretty expen sive.
The alternative being to have them go on the prwol once a year like the Beggars on PBS, and solicit funds... they get what they can through advertisements and banner ad's, but if you think about it, how much do you think Atlantis Aquatics and Dr. Mac are able to pay for a placement? These are guys growing corals out of their basements - not large corporations with Marketing Directors and gobs of money to spend.
I understand your frustration and know all too well how annoying it is to be all fired up for the worlds greatest reply to a coral question, only to be shut out by service problems for the next 5 minutes. My suggestion if you want to do something about it, would be to take some of Unlce Sam's Refund you'll be getting in a few months (if you're lucky enough to get one), and buy a T-Shirt or make a donation. With the extra money they collect, the folks can buy a bigger pipe, beefier server, or faster chips, to make this board even better.

First things first- please post questions to the Q&A Forum! Topics get lost in the general discussion forum way too easily!

We're currently on a non-dedicated server, and with our increase in traffic plus other busy sites on the same server, we're fighting for processing cycles. That's why if you'll take a second to browse around the rest of the site, you'll notice things are fine. It's just the UBB that gets slowed down. With that being said, look for a performance change in the near future......

Not to mention the fact that our traffic has SKYROCKETTED over the last week. It leaves me wondering - where have all you folks been? Where are you all coming back from?

Did you all get to take vacation until January 10th? No fair!!!!

I'm just joking of course, we are happy that so many people are visiting the site and taking advantage of the wonderful resources here. And DON'T worry, we ARE taking steps (major steps) to improve the situation.

Also remember, if you get a "Service Temporarily Unavailable" when you "Add Reply" it does NOT mean your post didn't go through - just hit refresh and you will see it come up.

I for one would like to see a board on the marine hobby that is by subscription. I would rather pay for a service that would provide high quality answers that were unbiased by the aims of advertisers. Anybody else want to subscribe for an improved service? I know I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, not because it is free, but because it has information I want. It costs about $50.00 per year.(Just an example)

Have you noticed that this board is biased by the aims of advertisers? I haven't but then I "work" here so I might be biased...:)

I've noticed that ALL of the discussion boards are incredibly UNBIASED...even when you consider that some of them are owned and run by aquarium businesses.

Still, I see your point. I would be nice to have a board with no ads - I can remember when our site was pretty young and only cost $30 per month...we only got 1 gigabyte a month of traffic then of course - now we get dozens...you do the math...

cwa46- I think your view tends to be the exception, and not the rule. A prime example of this can be seen with the MACO courses.... Folks balk at the $50 registration fee, and the class stays small. Funny thing is, I have yet to hear of anyone who wasn't happy with the investment they made in the course.

Most people want instant gratification, and want it for free. Just the way society is I guess.

It is FREE and I will put up with a little trouble from time to time.

Not like www.photopoint.com that I paid for there service and not no one can connect. Think they shut down after they got 19.95 from everyone that they could.

Am I the only one getting these things? Seems like it is getting worse on this site lately. Really screws you up when trying to set up a new computer and the cookies get set to no service pages. I am gonna get a refund...oh yeah its free. Really though, is it the traffic that is causing the problem or ???

I have noticed another strange thing happening. When I open a post, then hit the back button to go back to the forum, it shows most if not all the threads as old. It also appears as if it is ordered (sorted) from the previous time I was on the board (sometimes the day before). Refresh always solves the problem.

Paul, chucker answered that one in the quest/comm/sugg area a little while ago. It had something to do with the advertisers or something. To avoid, click on the rees.org logo on the left upper corner of your screen each time. James, just a though- reefc has been pretty screwed up with their website lately (basically not working at all most of the time) I actually dissappeared from their registered list, and the mod. over there said he had no record of me being actually on the site, except the fact that I had posted, but suddenly the "taz" over there had no location, email address, or anything. Maybe it was a poltergeist posting! With all their troubles, think many of their people are defecting here?

Paul, the answer to your question lies here.

Again, please let me reiterate that any question/comment/suggestion for the board should be placed in the Q&A Forum to prevent it from getting missed. It also provides the benefit of giving others the chance to see the solution to a question they may have had themselves.

Maybe they run their server on Microsoft?

Ok, I can put a lot of this to bed.

Thanks in no small part to the generous contributions of a few users, combined with our advertisers, we leased a dedicated server.

I'm in the process of configuring it now. The advertising system has already been moved. Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine will move in the next couple of days. Don't worry, this will, in no way, delay the relase of the first issue.

reefs.org, which includes this bulletin board, will be moved last, as it's a behemoth, and I want to minimize downtime. Once moved, the bulletin board will get a lot more CPU time, and that should reduce the Service Temporarily No Available messages.

After that I'm going to...

CWA46: It would cost a lot to have "experts" answer questions; especially if you want instant/semi-instant answers. I think you would have a hard time finding a group of experts that would be available 24/7. Here on the free boards, you can usually find someone 24/7 to answer your post.

I also think you have to take any answer on the boards with a grain of salt since we all have our own bias. Further, what works for one person doesn't always work for the next person. Lots of factors to consider: lighting, water quality, trace elements, water movement, placement ect. I sort through all the advice I get on the boards and compare to what I have done before I try something new.

Maybe I'm way off base, but it's just my view that the free boards are great and often you can get a wide range of views on how to do things which in the long run can be more helpful than a narrow expert view of how to do things.

Didn't mean to stir things up and I really didn't mean that the guys running this board are doing anything wrong. I have had exceptional service from the BB. Last time I had a computer crash and could not get on the board I had great support. I was e-mailed with ideas to get it going, several ideas and it took me awhile to get it ironed out. I would say for free it is the best thing going. So far I have a hard enough time keeping up with what is going on here and don't really go to ther boards. (yes I have a job) I may look into reef central because they get good info in there too, but really I have gotten good answers here from you guys and good service so no need to stray far.

As far as making it a pay site: I would have no problems paying a small subscription fee or us finding a way to keep things flowing faster. My concern would be that if a fee was charged it might inhibit the new guys from coming here to post stuff and animals suffering in the long run. I think the board is a lifeline to critters that are sold to uneducated people by LFS's that don't care about the critters but only about profits. Maybe those of us that ramble on the most should do something.

Chucker and James I hope I didn't offend you by my post, that was not my intention at all. I do however want the book Chucker

Oh yeah, and I also have never felt that the board has been biased by vendors...
