After many years of suffering through the inadequacies of Ultimate Bulletin Board, we will be migrating to a much better bulletin board software tomorrow, Thursday, May 8th.

The process will involve some down time, but will be well worth it. For a while, you will just get a message saying the bb is down. That will be while I am migrating everything to the new software. After that you will get a message saying that the board has moved, giving the new link. You'll want to update your bookmarks...

Those of you that have cookies storing your password will need to relogin, but it will give you a new cookie if you check "always log me in" or whatever. We will ultimately move all the links from reefs.org that point to the old board to the new board. If you've lost your password, there is a link to have the software reset it for you.

New features will be discussed and added after the migration.

Trust me you will like it. All the features of UBB and many more, and improved speed. Have I let you down yet? :c)

So what bulletin board software are you migrating to if you don't mind my asking?

phpBB2? Are you kidding? I don't want to offend you, but I've tried it and I really don't like it.

Why don't you wait until the new software is running before you begin to ***** about it.

I've used it before, and boy howdy, I don't like it. I just think it is not condusive to discussion like UBB is. This board doesn't seem slow, you know what I'm saying?

Why don't you wait and see the new bulletin board before you complain about it. Like MC said, we wouldn't be upgrading unless we thought it was the best for our needs.

Like Rick said, has he ever let us down before?

Do y'all remember "Service Temporarily Unavailable?" Where'd that go?

Happy reefkeeping,
James Wiseman

I've participated in several forums using phpBB2. I'm not sure what issues fishy_whateverhisname is concerened with, as I've never encountered problems with the script. In my opinion, it's very similiar to vbulletin.

Perhaps you tried version 1 of phpBB. Version 2.0 that has recently come out is very feature complete.

...and since no matter what we do 50% of the users complain, we were only trying to please the other 50% anyway...

Again, thank you for you input.

We have been in a battle with infopop for well over a year now to add features that they continue to ignore. When we add them from a 3rd party hack, they often don't work well, and are outdated everytime infopop releases a new version. Parts of UBB are also very CPU intensive, running in Perl and not PHP, though that has improved somewhat since version 6.

With respect to your opinions on other bulletin board software, I assure you we have investigated just about every package, and have decided on phpBB2 because it offers the features WE are looking for, for things WE plan to do here at reefs.org.

As for your strange 30-odd posts spanning 3 or 4 different usernames since joining our community in the past week, take it easy, we don't want you to burn out on us, or confuse other users with all the different usernames.

I hope everyone enjoys the new bulletin board system that we ARE installing tomorrow. I am confident that at least 50% of you will. I just hope our long time friends and supporters are in that 50% and see that we continue to make reefs.org the best place for reefkeeping on the internet. The rest of you, oh well, sorry.

I reccomend using YaBB-SE. It is a lot like UBB only less system intensive.

You are joking. YABB is as lacking in features as UBB, not SQL backended, and written in Perl like UBB. This thread need not go on any further. You must have decided to further it by looking up what some other random bb software might be and suggesting it. Thank you for your opinion, which most of this thread has been.
