This is my first time. I have a 54 gal. reef tank that I have had for 1 1/2 years. I use to have 5 watts of light per gal (285 watts,) now I have 8.15 watts of light per gal (440 watts.) When I changed the watts I started to get the alage on my tonga rock. It looks like Bryopsis sp. alage. My question is how do I controll it. It has over powered to of my coral frags.

John, please take note of the forum descriptions. This forum is for posting tank specs as a reference. I'll move the thread to the General Discussion Forum so that your algae question can be answered.

Just reach in there and manually harvest it. It comes off very easily. Don't harvest all of it though, leave some in the tank so you can harvest it periodically for nutrient export.

Thats all good and all, but what a pain. Does anyone know what type of alage this is? Is it in the family of hair alage?

I have it now and it sucks!
I have had it before and thought I had it licked when I raised the DKH. It is back again and I have a feeling it is due to my old lights. My VHO's are approx 10-11 months old. here is a link to a briopsys site I found. Jennifer at UCSC

Xphixer2,
Thank you so much for giving me the most informative information. I looked at the site you suggested and found out that the yellow eyed tang, which I have in my tank eats Bryopsis sp. I have had him for about three weeks. I my a LFS that stocks Tridachia Crispata (Lettuce Nudibranch.) I will get two and see what happens.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for the information. My tank has about 25 acrapora frags, from 1 month to about 7 months, so I don't want to turn off the lights. I do use VHO's. I just installed them in the canopy of my tank. I have a 175 w MH, 265 w VHO (75 w 50/50, 75 w daylight, and 115 w actinic.) Dawn/dusk what do you mean by "you can leave the main light on for only 5 or 6 hours, but the supplement lights on longer." I leave my MH on for 12 hours and the VHO's for 14 hours. By what you are saying you leave the lights on for only 6 hours at the most. Did i understand that correctly?

Yes that is what I meant. You need to balance giving your critters enough light and nutrients while robbing the bryopsis of its light and nutrients. It sounds like your new lights had something to do with it. I think bryopsis likes actinic VHO - but that is only my feeling. You are in for a long haul, hang in there.

Also, why is this site always giving me the reply Service Temporarily Unavailable. It is so frustrating when you are trying to reply and you can't.

This is from a recent post on the same topic:

I know of no chemical to add to get rid of the stuff.
Have you checked the age of your lights? Old lights shift in spectrum and up comes the icky green.
What kind of lights do you have. In my tank Bryopsis loved VHO actinic, so I got rid of it. Also if you have lights for dawn/dusk, you can leave the main light on for only 5 or 6 hours, but the supplement lights on longer.
I don't know if you would see a result from turning the light off for 2-3 days.
Have you added macro algae to the tank/sump to uptake the nutrients that the bryopsis is using?
Have you blasted the rocks with a powerhead, to get all the gook off them, and filtered the tank with a canister filter at the same time?
After you pulled the stuff off the rock, have you put the rocks back in the tank upside down - so the bryopsis gets no light?
Have you been underfeeding the tank?
You could move all the live animals to another tank (or into the sump - with lights of cours- if you have one) for a while and leave the lights off in the main tank for several weeks. I think setting up a small tank would cost less than thrashing the main tank with chemicals.
There is no quick fix to this problem that I know of. Sorry. I recently beat it, so it can be done.

If you do a search on bryopsis you will see much discussion on it. The search function is very useful. Also a search for "Service Temporarily Unavailable" will get you results on that question.

You may also want to check out this thread for some useful info.
