I am considering setting up a prop tank out of either a 5 or 10 gallon aquarium.

I have left over sugar sized agromax that I can seed with sand from my main tank.

I also have an old skilter 250 which can provide some circulation and minimum skimmming.

My LFS has live rock rubble cheap

the only cost factor is really lighting Im thinking about using a smartlight.

Has anyone done this ? and do you have any advice ?

I have done the exact same thing (10 gallon, sand from my established reef, cheap rubble rock, Skliter 250), expcet my "prop" tank became a nano and it has gone very well. I went with the HD 6500K PC shop light for $25 for lighting. I has worked well, however I am changing over to a 5x13 watt PC combination now that it its own tank and after almost a year the yellow color of that light has gotten to me. My only advice is that with these small tanks you have to be deligent about water changes. HTH

Hey there,

The cutting tank is a good excuse to start a nano hahah. I started with a ten gallon tank and just upgraded it to a 30 gallon. I used a bunch of leftover things to put it together and I am using the Home Depot (Lights Of America) light on it. So far it has worked great. The colt and capnella frags are looking great in there so the light must be ok. They produce some heat so i am going to drill breather holes in the plastic housing but the lights work well. I am going to post a page about the build out if I can get the time. Seems as though "WORK" has been cutting into my reef time.

Here's my prop setup that I tore down a couple months ago: http://www.liquidreef.com/ under the prop tank link. The lights that I think you guys are talking about are the Lights of America #9266's. I have info about them on my website.
