I am currently running a CPR back pack with a limewood airstone upgrade on my 30G (set up for 3 years). I began to feed my fish heavily recently (I have an anthias that likes to be fed messy/meaty foods 2-3 times a day)and have ntoiced an emergence of algae that was not present before the new feeding regimen. I would like to hear from those who have used the Remora Pro as to whether the increase in performance over my CPR is worth the $200. Should I just suck it up and buy a lifereef HOB?

Why the modification to the bakpak ?

I am currently running a CPR bak pak on my 37 gallon and am happy with it. How much of an increase in efficency did you achieve ?

I have had a Remora Pro for more than a year. I can assure you that there are better choices.

The Precision Marine HOT-1 is cheaper, yet built much better and works much better than the Remora Pro. Much more contact time, higher GPH throughput, loaded with features, and built like an army tank.

The Lifereef is the best HOT skimmer there is, but I really don't think any 30 gallon aquarium would need such a powerful piece of equipment.

Ill sell you my remora pro for 130$ you pay shipping, if interested let me know. I ran this on my 40 tall with 6 smallish fish. I feed this tank twice daily and have excellent water quality in this tank. I am going skimmerless, so wont be needing it.

Rich-n-poor, using limewood airstones with the CPR made it much more effcient (a lot more and much drier foam/gunk)and quieter than the venturi. The only drawback is the cost of replacing the stones once a month. Bigtank, my only concern with the PM HOT is that it is not as overflow proof as the CPR/Remora "same amount of water goes in and comes out design." I am weary of HOT skimmers that require water inflow and outflow adjustment. Did you find that the PM overflowed (via the neck/collection cup)if the water flow balance was not precise?

I think I've discussed this with bigtank before, but I disagree with him here. I have, use and like both the Remora Pro and the HOT-1 -- but I like the Remora Pro more. Construction is definitely better on the PM model, but the R Pro is easier to clean (a wire pipecleaner suffices for the injector assembly, and a collection cup that you don't need to remove thumbscrews to empty) and is a bit of a better performer. If you step up to a mag drive instead of the Rio 1400, it's performance significantly increases as well. Having talked to Mike at PM in some detail about the HOT-1, you just can't throw a larger pump on it to 'overdrive' it's performance.

Anyways, I like both, I use both, I recommend both, and either will definitely outperform a bakpak.

While I love the lifereef model, I'll echo that it would be incredible overkill on a 30g. Also it's in tank pump assembly would eat up a disproportionately large amount of space in a tank that size. If you think you're going to get a bigger tank and still not use a sump, then the lifereef might not be a bad idea at all. If, OTOH, you're not planning to go larger then I wouldn't go for the lifereef.

Oh, one other point on the HOT-1. If you buy the auto waste collector, you'll never need to worry about overflows.
