I currently have a 55g FO tank with crushed coral substrate and a 30g tank with 90 lbs live rock and 30 lbs live sand. I am going to move everything into the 55g.

here is my plan.

I am going to get rid of the crushed coral. I have purchased an additional 43 pounds of live sand, should be here any day. I also bought 30 lbs of carib-sea dry sand. (No SD sand available here.) I also obtained an additional 20 pounds of live rock that is abundant with grape colerpa. (although the Naso tang in the 55 is thining it out rather quickly!) I am going to move my Naso to the 30g for a few days while I set up the 55g. My filtration will consist of a Aqua clear pro 75 wet/dry. The water passes through the skimmer before reaching the bio-balls. (I haven't decided if I am going to use the Bio-balls. Comments welcome) Lighting will be supplied by 4 -55w pc's. I also have some red (lava rock?) decorator rock that has been in the 55 FO for about 2 years. I may use that as base rock. (any suggestions?)

I am sure I have left something out.

If you have any suggestions, comments, questions, or warnings, fell free to fire away.

Thanks

I must be on the right track! It doesn't seem like anyone in here is shy about commenting if the see a potential problem.

I have visited many message boards, and this one is by far the best. Everyone seems to be very willing to help.

Thanks everyene, and happy reefing!

Lose the lava rock and the bio balls. A 55 gallon is too small to house a Naso tang long term too, so think bigger soon or you'll be finding another home for your tang in the future.

Yeah, ditch the lava rock and the bio balls. You should have enough bio filtration in your rock and sand to take care of everything.

I was thinking of putting the lava rock on the bottom before adding the sand and use it as base rock. I think the caves in the lava rock would make a great support system. The lave rock wouldn't be seen. Other than looks, is there another reason I should get rid of it?

Also, Should I just put Live sand where the Bio-Balls would go in the sump? Do I need to put anything under it?

This part is all new to me. Never tried this type of filtration before.

I got my new wet/dry today. I can see that I will have to put something in there if I want to put Live sand where the bio-balls should be. What can be used to let the water flow, yet keep the sand from getting into the sump?
