Well here goes. Right now I am in the process of getting ready for a move to Boston. I will be moving there Jan. of 2002. Right now I have a 90 gallon reef setup that has been running for 2 years. I enjoy this hobby so much I just have to take a piece of it with me and leave the rest for my parents and siblings to keep. I have two big questions i could use any opinions or suggestions on.

1. I will be living in an apartment with a friend of mine. What is the max size tank I could get that will be able to move after a couple years. I was thinking a 40 might be it.

2. Now this is going to be a little long so please bear with me. I am going to describe my ideal setup with a 40 gallon breeder tank. I like the breeder cause it gives you more surface area for sand bed and rockwork. I just want to know whether it would be feasible and if not what I might be able to do as an alternative.

Specs 40 gallon Breeder 36"X18"x36" one overflow which will feed a sump/ refugium. I want to try and split a 20 gallon and have one return pump with a y that will provide circulation for the tank.

Lighting 1-250W 6500k Iwasaki with either 2 55w pcs or 2 95w vhos with 2 cooling fans in the hood one dedicated to the lights and one pointing at the surface to create surface tension and cool at the same time. On the lighting which one would you think would be look better color wise?

I want to have a two islands of rock in the tank on both ends. with a sand bar in the middle. One side will have SPS and the other will have LPS. with a clam in the sand. I want to try and get a rose anemone to and just have my pair of gs maroons as the fish inhabitants.

So what do you think?? Can this be done in an apt. in Boston?? I will be in a good building where pets are allowed and it has a good electrical. I have seen some crazy things go on in some of my friends places where they can only have 3 things on at once or they blow a fuse. My place will not be like that though. Will I have to go without a sump and have a hang - on skimmer? and a couple of powerheads for circulation?? Is the tank size just to big??

All your responses, opinions, success stories, questions are greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Boston.

I don't see why you couldn't have your tank as described.
I have a 55 in a small Boston apartment. My tank is lit by VHOs rather than MH, though. Your tank may get hot as blazes in the summer.

Your plan sounds good to me.
Send me an email when you get here, and I'll add you to the Boston Reefers email list so you can get in on our meetings and frag swaps.

Good luck with the move.

Ill definitely be hooking up with you guys once I get up there. I have a few things i may think of trying to keep the tank cool. I know how hot it can get during the summer. What do you keep in your 55?? How many lamps do you have lighting it and at what wattage??

My 55 is lit by 2 VHOs at 110 watts each on an Icecap ballst, and 2 NOs at 55 watts each on an Icecap.
I keep a couple of soft corals, and about 5 sps corals (Acropora, Montipora).
Everything is growing well (knock on wood).
