I am testing out my 300 gallon tank to make sure I have everything water tight. Is there any reason
not to mix the salt in the tank just fore the first
time?

I tested mine with tap water first, left it for 48 hours then emptied the tap water filled with RO/DI threw in the salt with 4 powerheads and left it for 24 hours so it could get up to temp - the only problem was adding the sand and rock afterwards - the sand made it cloudy and aquascaping under water sucks, in hindsight, i'd add the sand, aquascape the rock, then add the pre-mixed RO/DI water as fast as I could make it - I have a couple of 45 gallon bins that I keep water in.

Oh no, you have to set up 60 5 gallon buckets w/ powerheads, airstones, and heaters to mix your salt! Duh...

No reason at all not to mix it directly in the tank. Just don't put the sand in first, w/ no sand on the bottom just drop in a big submersible pump, add some salt, and watch the fun. Good luck w/ the new tank! I can just imagine how many pieces of coral i could put in a 300......sigh......

If you already have LIVE ROCK in the tank, I certainly would NOT put fresh water on it. Of course, unless you really want dead or dying rock.

If the tank is empty, just put in the fresh and mix the salt.
