Well, the only thing I can think of is gas bubbles from photosynthesizing algae, usually due to insufficient water circulation. If you've got a lot of diatoms or cyano on your rock then that could be it.

I have the same issue on my 180. It seems small bubbles get sucked into the intake of my return pump and get chopped up into very tiny bubbles that stick to the rocks and grow to be larger bubbles. All this is inspite of the baffles (partitions) in my sump.

Can anyone tell me why I have very fine bubbles all over my live rock?
I have a 180G Reef with a sump and protien skimmer. Under a pair of 400W 12K MH. my sump is sectioned and tese bubles don't seem to be comming from the return. Any answers?

The tank has been setup for 14 months.
The bubbles appeared over the last month.
The only addition to my tank was over the summer.
I added a chiller in August.
