I got a pair of false Percs from premiumaquatics.com and I would highly recommend them. mine were healthy, well-adjusted and very reasonably priced. Great service too.
ORA has true percs if you ask them, but they don't advertise them often as they have never been able to match the wild color of the true perc.. their tank raised ones look more like ocellaris.. they lack the deep black edging.
Have you tried pairing jouveniles? I guess I was real lucky and purchased two true percs from separate LFS. Had a Riiteri Anemone and the larger Perc (female) claimed it immediatley and wouldn't allow the smaller one to share. About two months later, both true Percs are larger and are now paired. Also, paired Percs cost more ($50 or more). The smaller perc I got for only $7 from my LFS and the total colst was less than half of what anyone charges for a paired percs. I agree - tank raised are better and they are not hard to find.
I thought of gettign a couple of juvenile true percs but heard that they will often not pair up. It takes more than two, more like three or more. Then I am stuck with either a couple of mated pairs as was the case with sillingw, I really don't want more than two in my reef. I guess I could take the chance and get two juveniles and hope for the best but... I need to think about this and possibly keep searching for a mated pair. I did see a mated pair of true percs at FFE, unsure if they are wild or tank raised, only $35 plus shipping, not bad.
If it doesn't say tank raised, it's not tank raised.
7 bucks for a TR true perc an an lfs? Sounds wild to me. I've seen the occasional ocellaris marked that price at petco or whatever sold as a perc.. as most places do. I've never seen a TR true perc from either ORA or c-quest that came anywhere near wild coloration.. which is odd since the TR ocellaris ORA sells have incredible color.
I got 4 tank raised juveniles all the same size, put them in the tank and ended up with two mated pairs - it took 6 months to get to that stage - and it took 4 months for them to take to their different anemones, but I think it's worth it to persevere with captive propogated rather than wild caught.
Thanks for all of the links and suggestions. I went to my lfs and they had a pair of stunning tank raised false percs. I decided to forego the true percs and purchase this beautiful pair (the female is very nice, lots of black, not like a ture perc but really nice. The male is much more plain but a really bright, beautiful, deep orange color) I'll post pics on my website as soon as I get some decent ones. It seemed the right thing to do. I really wanted tank raised and they were right in front of my eyes so no guess work on what the pair would look like and no trouble with more shipping stress. Thanks again everyone
