I use a old whisper 2 about once a month. I leave it there for 2 days, then stop. The other times I use it as a mechanical filter if I see it necessary.

I used to use carbon in my salt tanks, but stopped after I found out that carbon has the tendency to strip the slime coat off of tangs.
I knew it did this in fresh tanks with discus, but I didn't realise that tangs were susceptible too.

I have some, and a polyfilter, in a magnum canister filter I have set up on a timer for surge. It runs about 3 hours a day. I change the carbon and the polyfilter when I notice much discoloration in the polyfilter.

I sometimes run it if things aren't looking quite "right" (maybe every 3 or 4 months) or if there's been a problem.

Run for 2-3 days, once a month. More often if you have a lot of soft corals or some of the ones that produce the most terpenoids - like Sinularia.

With the problems I've had since a heatwave crahsed a lot of corals over two months ago, I've dosed carbon about twice a month since then, and it's helped considerably. I leave it in for about 3-4 days, then take it out. It's in a filter bag in my sump, right near the output flow from the tank. My skimmer also quit about a month ago, and the carbon has kept the tank stable whilst I look for a new one.

Peace,

Chip

24/7 just a little bit though. I've been doing this for about 2 years with no problem. I rinse it once a week and change it once a month.
