Using HO ballast to drive VHO lamps

I can get HO ballasts for roughly half the cost of VHO ballasts. They run at about 2/3 of the wattage of a VHO ballast. I figure that this might be a good idea, since Icecaps are just electronic HO ballasts, so I'd get similar output and longer lamp life. Anyone else considering or doing this?

I already have a couple HO ballasts that are designed to run 2 110w bulbs each (96"). That is the same wattage as a 4' VHO would require. But from what I've read it may or may not work. I am going to experiment using these ballasts to overdrive NO's as explained herehere.
