I tend to clean the neck of skimmer above the water line occasionally, it seems to give me a mini break in period afterwards, but then produces better skimmate. I usually only do this when I see a thick coat of gunk on it.

cleaning my entire skimmer as we speak (funny, i decided to come online while it soaks and this is the thread i find).
I clean the cup about twice a week on average
and this is the first time i am actually taking the entire skimmer apart (including the pumps) and soaking the pumps in deltec's EZclean. I cleaned it all up and it's now as if it's brand-spankin-new.
I would probably do this 2 or 3 times a year (depending on how it performs).
This is for the Deltec Turbo 1060S

When I had a tank up and running :-( I would clean the cup once a week (it held a quart and 1/2) and ONCE A YEAR I took the whole skimmer and pump out, filled a 10g tank with hot vinegar and ran it for 5 hours until it was sparkling.

I then rinsed with fresh RO and put it back in - never having to disasemble.

Hmmm. I'm liking this idea Jim! :D

Mine is external..and in a different room where there are 'daylight' bulbs in the ceiling fixture...so I have coralline growing inside of mine. This could work out very well for me!
I clean the cup out once a week (drains into a gallon jug) and in the past I'd cleaned the skimmer manually every 2 months...but now I'll use Jim's method!
