i have an aga corner w/predrilled overflow. it runs to an amiracle filter converted to sump w/skimmer only with a flexible tube. the tube enters on the side below the water line of the first compartment.
i have used both the aga overflow kit and a durso modification and i can’t stop it from belching.
as i watch the water enter the sump, it is mixed with air. every minute or two, the air diminishes and then a big burp of air comes through and splashes the water in the sump all over and makes a disgusting noise. this tank is in the bedroom and i HAVE to figure out how to fix this. if i move the tube around a bit, propping it up here and there, i can reduce the interval this happens, but cannot eliminate it.
does any of this make sense?
thank you for your help now and in the past,
bruce

Hi Beemert -
I, too, had this problem a few weeks ago - I had just re-plumbed my sump to get rid of the ameracle wet/dry and put in a bigger sump. The "burping" sound was awful! I did a search and found this tip by HAMMER that he posted last August. I tried it, IT WORKED!
Posted by Hammer: "All I did was take two 12" lengths of air line tubing and put them a few inches down into the overflow tube. Poof, sudden silence!
Actually I tried a large hose first, but it impeded the flow too much. Then I tried a single air line, almost worked. Two airlines and it is silent!"

It worked - I really didn't need to do the Durso Standpipe - This is all the fix I needed to get rid of the "burping"

Hope this helps!

i am trying to visualize this. from the top of the standpipe with the big foam doughnut on it, slide a piece of airline into the standpipe where? through the doughnut? are you doing this with the aga overflow kit or just a straight standpipe?
thanx for the reply.

sorry for being so dim, but it just isn't clicking for me

I am using the exact same set up as you have (mine is 72 bowfront AGA) This is how I did it: 2 12" pieces of airline tubing with an elastic band around them; stuck them both down into the standpipe with an inch or so sticking up above the top of the pipe and put the rubber band around the top of the pipe to secure them in place. It looks a little funny, but the noise stopped. I compare this to when you pour a gallon of milk too fast and you get the glug, glug sound. When you let a little air in, the milk flows more smoothly. (Not a bad analogy for a GIRL, huh? My husband was very surprised that I fixed this without his engineering help!)
Let me know if this makes more sense.

By the way, you probably want to take the sponge donut off that overflow - unless you clean it very frequently - like every day. It collects a lot of stuff that rots. It really doesn't do much.
