My physdics teacher currently owns a 29g tank with a humu trigger(4") and the fish grwos two inches per year.He owns a domino damsel(2"),blue,
damsel(3"),pj cardinal(4").He wants to know what size tank(minimum) should he buy to house the trigger and damsels in the future and hwat type of filtartion would be best for the tank.He does not wnat to use a sump setup and will only have the fish and live rock.He is thinking about hying a 90g in with the next few months.
Nick

ps: Could he keep a naso tang with these fish.By the way the trigger is starting to chase after the damsels. Will he eat/attack or bite them in the future.

given the speed of trigger growth, I'd say at least a 90 or 150G for next 1 1/2 years.

Since there won't be corals, you can go with DSB, super sized protein skimmer and a simple mechanical filter.

Iwill let someone else comment on it. but i'll prefer not to see that.

Depends on how fast other fishes will grow, Any thing that is weaker/smaller than the trigger all have equal chances of becoming from playpal to a big meal! Also depends on how hungry the trigger is!!

I have had a huma trigger for about 4.5 years. He was about 3.5" when I bought him, and he is now about 6". When I first got him, he was in a 45g breeder tank (36"x18"). About 3 years ago, he was moved to a 90g, where he remains today. He is in the tank along with 5" spiny box, 4" sailfin dottyback, 2" humbug, 4" purple tang, and a 5" corris wrasse. Most of these fish have been in the tank for 2-4 years. All of the fish get along fine. The purple tang and the dottyback are more aggressive than the trigger.

To answer your question about tank size, a 90g should be ok for at least a few years, but might eventually be too small.

As damnhippo suggested, go with live rock, a deep sandbed, and good protein skimming. You may want to check CPR for the skimmer. They have a new hang-on model that is similar to the balpak, but twice the size. Which might be perfect for the 90g.

Since a picasso trigger can get to be about the size of a dinner plate in captivity, the best way to buy a tank is to buy the absolute biggest tank you can fit and afford, or you'll always be wanting that next size bigger. As far as aggressiveness of the picasso and adding a naso tang, don't do it. Just like all fish, each one is an individual. For a trigger to chase damsels around and not get beat up right back, it's got a mean streak, and speaking from experience, you don't want to put anything in with a trigger with an attitude. No matter how much bigger or how aggressive your new arrival might be, the trigger could still do a lot of damage if it's predisposed to doing so. My experience has to do with a picasso, around 4", taking a few chunks out of a bat ray, which sent the bat ray out of the pond and onto the floor, which was ultimately it's cause of death. And, this was in a 300 gallon system designed to temporarily house the bat ray.

Well, I never said my huma was anything but a wimp. You never can tell (until it's to late).

I had a Huma and a Naso together for over a year, along with a Volitan Lion. But the Huma went nuts and killed the Lion. In the process, the lion got a few good pokes in on the Huma.

Now I just have the Naso
