Think of it as another tank where you can allow the smaller life forms copepods amphipods, etc to survive and multiply without being eaten by other tank inhabitants (a refuge) also, you can allow algae to grow - the small life will find it's way back into the main tank for food, the algae will grow and therefore take nitrates out of the water, you just pull some out every now and again or put the odd algae covered rock into the main tank as food. You can also switch the lights on when the main tank lights are off (reverse cycle) and so avoid the sometimes precipitous PH drops. If you plumb it in well, it could also be used to house fish temporarily if they are being hasselled or even as a quarantine tank if you can easily switch it to a stand alone. This is basically what I do with my refugium, it's 30 gallon tank supporting my main tank which is 24o Gallon.
