ok still debating the choices for the new tank and I have the money for it already current considerations are 90 gal cube 125 or possibly 180 but the wife grimmaces everytime she hears 180 so should i go with the length of the 125 or the girth of the 90 ?

i will use my 37 as a sump so you decide whats more important .....

Length or Girth ?

I would go for length, if you can find a 6' long 125. The stand that fits the 6' long tank will also get you ready for the next step........250G!!

Depth deffinetly, I switched from a 75 gallon (4x18x20) to a 120 (4x24x24) and the depth has made aquascaping so much nicer. My tank, w/out the addition of any more LR, is visually more open and more aesthetic.

A wider tank makes a much better reef......take a look at this tank I setup in Feb this year....48 long x 24 tall x 30 wide

I would go for the 180. it's 72" x 24" x 24" Gives you length and Girth.

If you have wife thinking approved to spend the loot, then go for the size before she comes back to reality and says what the hell did you do.

Looks like Geronimo is going fishing.

Rich-n-poor,
I don't think you'll be able to find a standard stand just because the tank is not standard (although I have seen them on one web site for sell) I had the tank custom made from a local builder (411.00) The only thing I should have done was get Euro bracing. Its been setup for about 8-9 months now with 2x250 watt double ended HQI's mounted in PFO mini pendants. I also have a 400 watt Iwasaki and 4x55 watt actinic PC's mounted in a PFO reflector, the reflector is mounted over the glass cross bar. Its going to be mostly SPS and clams.

The tank is only 4 foot long so it looks kind of small from the front, but when you look at it from the sides it gets a lot bigger. IMO, its the perfict size for a 4 foot tank.

ok the 90 is 48x18x24

I have 110 watts of power compact for blue acitnic supplement

I want to add metal halide and be able to keep the following

mushrooms
yellow polyps
green star polyps
zooanthins
various leather

I like these corals because they are all hearty and do not demand much light I also put pretty heavy bioloads on my tanks as I still do this for the fish primarily

what metal halides ballast would you recommend ?

a dual 175 would give me 350 watts plus the 110 pc's total 450 watts or 4.5 watts per gallon which is more than I am currently running

Go for the Girth, then you can keep huge plates, wellsophylias and all of the other sand dwelling besties, also more girth = larger surface area = more oxygen excange & larger sand surface area. Girth man Girth, Length comes secondary in my books.
