I was browsing the Grainger web site and came across several little giant pumps. Question is, are these okay for aquarium use? Also, does anyone have any experience with this brand? I'm trying to find a replacement pump for my mak4 that has a higher flow rate...

thanks,
ink

I have had Little Giant return pumps on both large tanks. They are external (not submersible pumps). Can only say good about them.

I have 3 LG4MDQX-SC pumps on my 225gal. Little to no maintenance, external so they contribute very little heat to the tank and reasonably priced. Two thumbs up for sure!

I have had Little Giant pumps for years. They are reliable and quiet. The larger pumps like the 4mdqx and 5 and 5.5 mdqxsc are louder because of a fan that comes on the pumps. The 3mdqxsc pump is virtuly silent.

The only problem I have had with them lately is the hose barb fittings I screwed into the intake need more teflon tape than in my past pumps, to prevent a slow drip there. very reliable motors and completly ceramic shaft for saltwater.

They are made in OKC, OK.

BE CAREFUL! I also use little giant pumps, but, you need to make sure you get the right one. If it's submersible, it's probably the wrong one to get. Little Giant has a line of freshwater pumps that have very attractive prices, but have a lot of steel on them, therefore, they rust and fall apart, and leech stuff into your water. These are pond pumps, and not meant for your saltwater tank! It might be priced attractively, but don't make the mistake of buying it and using it on your saltwater tank. That said, I have been using one of my Little Giant pumps for over 10 years without any maintenance besides the occasional vacuuming of dog fur and dust off it (about every 5 years) and squirting some oil on it (about every 6 years). Very reliable pumps, and fairly quiet.

If it's a model that requires oiling every 6 months or so there should be two small ports on the top of the pump where you drip the oil in.

Grainger is usually pretty expensive. I would check out the prices at some pet supply mail order shops. Little giant makes alot of different pumps so if you buy one from grainger make sure it is saltwater safe.

Even if they don't require oil, you still may want to spray some WD40 in there every few years to clean off some of the dust that has built. It'll quiet a pretty quiet pump down so that you don't notice the hum and whir anymore.

Cool, thanks for the replies! One more question, can anyone direct me to an online store that sells little giants?

Thanks,
ink
