I had a 1100 to go bad on me after a year old but not older than 15 months. It is my understanding that it is the larger Rios that are having the problems. And the larger ones started having problems within the last 2 years.
I've had 2 RIOs. One large one started making noise at around 1 year and I don't trust it for anything anymore... But it works well for pumping water out of RO storage tank (big garbage can on wheels)
The small one came with a CPR sump for the skimmer. Crapped out in 1 year.
I had a rio 2500 that fried on me and a rio 400. I still have a rio 180 that I use for my refugium pump and the 180 works great. used to have a 600 with my cpr too and that worked fine. The large ones seem to have the problems as mentioned above but there really isnt a reason to get the cheaper small ones either...get a maxijet or somethin.
I had a 2500 and 3100, both died in about a year. Both regularly cleaned and maintenanced. Luckily, no oil leak. The 3100 were used on AquaC EV150, switched to Mag 9.5, the 2500 were used as power head/circulation. Switched to 2 Maxijet 1200.

Man nobody seems to have luck with Rio's on this board. I have used nothing else in the last 3 years and they have all worked flawlessly. I don't even service them that much, maybe once a month at the most. Maybe I'm just lucky and should go knock on wood after posting this.
For those who have had the infamous Rio experience, I was wondering about the age of the pump in question. Did it happen while the pump was fairly new, a year or so old, or after years of running it? I'm wondering if the problems occur fairly quickly after they go into use or not.
Also, is anyone using the "stealth" Aquaclear 901 powerhead? Seems like it would be a good replacement for the Rio I have (don't panic, I don't have it in my tank!) but I've never seen one except in the pet warehouse catalog.
