tank placment

I just got a 125 gallon tank and I was wondering if anyone knew if its ok to place my tank the same way the joist in my house run or across them that is a lot of weight and I dont need to have a structual problem later can any one help

DO NOT run this tank parallel to joists. First, I would double check the joisting system and make sure it is structurally sound. This will probably be the heaviest object on your joists. Run it perpendicular so its weight is distributed across several joists. If your hous is relatively new, it might have the strut joisting instead of beam. Much more structural strength than beams. (its made by 2*4s running \|/|\ versus one long span). I would be sweating a little about the amount of weight on an upper level vs. on lowest level. If you can, contact the original builder, may have some loading info. good luck, update when your setup!

This gets a bit more involved than a simple yes/no. First thing would be:
1) Can you visisbly see the floor joists from below and identify them..i.e. Trus Joists Silent Floor 150, etc.
2) How is the joist connected to the building i.e. brace, hanger, etc
3) What level are you putting this on?

Then think about the weight of your tank filled, sump and live rock, you'll probably be in the 1500-2000 lb range.

To make this quick and simplified (you can email me questions) in most modern homes you will be okay, if possible I would locate the tank on a joist, but the weight dispersion will probably be within the bounds of your joist shear force capacity. This just needs to be checked by verifying the type used, etc.

Complicated answer to a simple question I know, but it seems to be the trend in this hobby.

a basic rule of construction is a 2"x8" joist will span 10' when spaced 16" on center a 2"x10" will span 12' excetera with a realatively safe load bearing capacity

but there are several factors in play.....

What is the spacing between the joist ?

are they solid wood joist or engineered lumber ?

what material are the joist pine ?

is there cross bracing between the joist ?

what distance does the joist span ?
