When I began reefkeeping, I fed my tank 4-5 times a day. After a few years, I fell into the trap of listening to too many people telling me that is an accident waiting to happen--I listened and cut back on my feedings. i noticed a detectable decrease in life in my DSB. About 1 month ago, I started heavy feeding again. Life in my sand is back, nitrates 0. Just my experiences.
The pic below is about 1" of sand. I counted 6 worms and countless ministars --see the legs?? Jyust wanted to share

it doesn't sound like to me that you were over feeding, obviously your sand bed critters were benefiting from the amount of food available, when you decreased the available food the poor critters suffered, I always say "if it aint broke don't fix it".

imow,

Your tank is alive with worms!! If it wasn't for them in the sand bed, I would say you are going overboard.

Where did you get the live sand from?

wow! That is an amazing sandbed. I'm curious how deep your sand bed is in total? Also, what size tank is it and how old?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Sand bed ?? Sorry guys, great worms. I have them too in the back area of the tank where I left in my crushed coral. I go back there to remember what life was like, with millions of copepods and worms, until I went with sand. Now I'm not saying anything bad about sand filtration, as I can't yet, am too new to it.

But I do know, when I look at those corners there's the wormfest like above, and in some perverse way.....I just love that !!

Hello all--

The tank is a 72 gallon, set up a little over 3 years ago. I used all live sand ($$) as SDown wasnt really recognized yet. I basically feed the tank everytime I watch it. I give it Form 1/2/Prime Reef/Brine flakes, Tahitian Cryopaste, Rotifers....nothing live or frozen.
The bed ranges from 3 to 5".

On a side note, before I go to bed each night, I take one of the red plastic beer cups, cover the bottom with algae paste, put in a spoon of rotifers (golden pearls) and about 3/4" worth of flakes, add som tank water, and blast it in the tank. It is really sickening how much food goes into the tank.
Heres a link to some pics.

The white strands you see at the water line are mini-stars, not spaghetti worms. You just cant see any of the bodies in the pics.
