Of course you can have corals, any coral, if you use ozone and a UV filter. It will just be harder for the corals to grow since you are removing more possible food sources by using either of them. Why do you feel you need to use either one. Most people do just fine with a good skimmer (or no skimmer) and a DSB for filtration. My advice would be to stick with basics as we know them now and go low-tech, fewer things to work on and/or break. BTW, I tried using ozone to increase skimmer efficiency a few years back. I was not able to see any difference.

Well the reasson that I was going to use both is because A: I have both units B: I heard that they help keep fish helthy.

I plan on my tank being mostly fish for a while (I already have two tangs that are waiting to go in the 105g one of which really needs the room)

I kinda dove right in to this hobby and bought my friends tank and ended up with lots of "stuff" (equipment, etc). If you want to know everything i have let me know

I use ozone on my reef, mainly because the add. of little ozone helps the skimmer performing even better. I keep quite a lot of fish (18 in a 50 G), and I feed huge ammounts, not only for the fish, but also for the tubastrea and the BT anemone in it.. Next to that, the add of a little ozone helps to keep the water very clear. IME this level of 'clearance' isn't possible with carbon only.

Here a recent (4. nov this year) of a piece of my reef to show that keeping corals with ozone is possible

In reality, my tank isn't that dark, it's only the pic which is so dark..

Mark,

I use UV 24/7 and ozone occasionally.

Coral feeding pathways have been over simplified, and UV and Ozone can create a healthier environment.

I've thought about using ozone but have decided against it for two reasons.

Firstly, I don't want ANY chance of breathing that stuff in.

Secondly, I wonder what happens when the unit breaks down (which is will eventually). I'm sure this would be just like trying to cycle a fully stocked tank i.e. a very bad experience.

As for UV - I have one plumbed in but turned off. I can't imagine that I'll ever want to turn it on - it will just kill off all the lovely beneficial critters that pass through it each day. It's only there because I happen to have it - at least the bulb lasts a long time the way I use it
