I have two different species that are spreading like mad and pulse like crazy at night. They pulse during the day, but not like at night.

Any ideas as to why?

Mine curl up and go to sleep when it's lights out. They pulse like crazy during the day. HTH

They're afraid of the dark.

I have heard that xenia pulsing is a factor of temperature, pH, and KH/alk, so perhaps when your lights go out and your parameters drop a bit, the xenia are affected and pulse more. Try testing your water before the lights go out, and then testing it again a few hours after they go out and see if any of the parameters have changed.
