I hate to use an air pump which they require, also it goes inside the tank and that small of a tank it would take up too much room for me. I would go with a hang on model. JMO

Howdy,

They are OK, but can get finicky. I had one on my first tank, a 20g. It worked OK when I could keep it dialed in, but if anything changed, it would not skim well.

Also, it might be too big for a 5g. I had the medium sized one in my 20g, and it took up alot of the tank.

I hate to say it, but a seaclone might be good option. The only thing in the tank is the maxijet pump. It might be too tall, so check it out.

Good luck,

Scott.

Most of the time, even a small air driven skimmer will need a pretty beefy airpump--either Tetra Luft or Deepwater. The typical airpump that you use in your FW tank probably isn't going to cut it. That's another $40 to the price.

I vote for a hang-on skimmer. Everyone seems mostly pleased with the newer Prizms (12 blade impellor). You'll end up close in cost, and you don't have a protein skimmer dominating the inside of the tank.

Hi Mike-

RUN THE OTHER WAY!

I had a Lee's skimmer in my tank when I began keeping a SW Tank and had to constantly fiddle with the air flow, level and replace airstones frequently to get ANY amount of skimmate. And the loss of tank space isn't great either (plus it looks like crap in there).

JMHO-
