Hi,

I'd like to know about corals that are fish safe and vice versa. I'd like to combine the two, but not if either will be destroyed, are there any safe combinations?

All corals are fish-safe. Many fish are not coral-safe. These include Angelfish, Butterflyfish, Tilefish, Wrasses and Triggers. Certain members of these families are known corallivores.

NB, some species of a particular family may be reef safe; research into a particular species if you're interested in the fish.

Not all corals are fish safe. I have heard of large mushrooms eating fish. A bubble coral killed one of my tomato clown a few months ago. And the anemone like hard corals could probaly kill small fish.

chris, you're right. But those occurances are rare, and should come with disclaimers. The clown was killed because it decided to take the Plerogyra sp as its host (fishes are stupid

). Large mushrooms like Elephant ears (Actinodisus sp.) may kill small, slow moving, perching fishes.

A couple years ago, I had a purple rose anemone that swallowed a big meal....A brazillian sea horse.

I was ignorant enough to mix the 2 in a 75G tank. By the time I found out in the morning, All I see is the head sticking out of the mouth of anemone........sob......sob.....

I have also seen carpet devour gobies & shrimps (not my personal experiences). Most of the fish death occurances seem mostly be involved with anemones. Afterall, that is what they do in the wild. The fish being preyed upon may already be in weak shape and confined in a small space with anemones.

I have not heard or seen LPS or SPS or even softies deliberately injure healthy fishes.

Thanks everyone.

I have a 90g, 48x34x15 (approx). Just 2 damsels (dominoe and striper) and a snowflake eel in there now.

I had an Open Brain eat a green chromis. I'm guessing the chromis took refuge there during the night cause when the lights came on in the morning the tail sticking out was all that's left!
