Does anyone here use bacteria additives such as Super Bugs BRF-1A from Enviro-Reps? I have been using it and it seems to work very well. It is for bio remediating lakes, ponds and lagoons. It is mainly used by pond owners, but works in Saltwater as well. I know most reefers don't like using fluidized biofilters, but I populated mine with Super Bugs and it seems to be helping a great deal in keeping phosphates and nitrates really low since I only have a small amount of live rock at the moment, no live sand and no macroalgae. I do have a decent skimmer though. Nitrates are <2ppm, phosphates are <.2ppm. I would like to have 0 nitrates, but maybe that will happen when I add more live rock eventually. I'm also assuming that the Super Bugs will populate the live rock as well and get me to 0ppm nitrates. If anyone is interested here's the link: http://www.enviro-reps.com/brf-1a.html

Also remember that whatever sand you have will also become populated eventually. But to remove Nitrates completely requires an Oxygen free environment, ie deep inside the rocks, or below about 3" of sand. Once these areas are populated with enough denitrifying bacterea your Nitrates will be zero, but its only in oxygen free zones that this total denitrification can take place. Good luck, sounds like you have a successfull system on the way, keep at it.

Hey thanks for the support, and your post brings me to another question. I have about 3-4" of pink samoa sand and I've noticed bubbles coming out of it periodically. When I took a closer look at the lower levels of sand that is against the glass, I see air bubbles all through about the top inch and making their way to the surface every so often. I'm assuming that this is the Super Bugs doing their thing, but could it also be anaerobic bacteria producing nitrogen bubbles? If so, would that be good to have since there would be a nitrate to nitrogen conversion going on like in a DSB even though the sand isn't much more than 3-4" deep? Thanks again!
