At the Western Marine conference, circa 1995, I was talking to Alf Neilson about what the next direction he was taking in reefkeeping. At the time he said that he, along with other European hobbyists were going to expore keeping reef flats, ecosystems with turtle grasses and sand. I don't know if refugiums grew out of this but it's possible. If not, they've had plenty of time to put together some interesting tanks.

I often read about how German hobbyists pioneered the reefing hobby back in the eighties... Anybody know what the trend over there is these days? Anything interesting that might trickle our way eventually?

They have decided that everyone giving people advise that all they need is live rock and sand for filtration is hurting the hobby. They are making a pact that anyone advising someone to pull the bio balls must first in detail explain using a refugium and how much maintanence goes with it. After reviewing how much coruption there would be in this pact, They have all decided to go back to wet/drys with bio balls.
