It depends on which species you're referring to. G. mealagris or G. melatremus (I think that's the right sp. for them). G. melatremus is quite a bit smaller than mealagris (size discrepancy of over a foot long). I have not kept G. mealagris before and can only relay info on G. melatremus. G. melatremus is the smaller one and is truly an awesome fish, being completely golden yellow in coloration, with only 2 specs of black on each side of its gills. My friend currently has one in his 50 gallon tank right now and I was thinking of picking one up. It currently resides with a pair of Solomon percs, australian and neon dottyback, and a handful of neon and Cortez redheaded gobies, and lots of hermits and a couple of scarlet cleaner shrimps. Some of the inhabitants in the tank are small enough for it to swallow, but he completely leaves them alone. He handfeeds his krill and small chunks of squid. Overall, its a pretty easy fish to keep.
He only paid $50 bucks for his from a LFS. At the time, the owner didn't know what it was since it was a hitchhiker on a peace of live rock, and it was offered to him at that price. Fortunately, the owner has since found sources for the eel and is currently selling them for $100 or so. You can find them ocassionally from Marine Center at around $125-150.
