I'm having a tough time figuring out which species of Acropora this piece is. I am trying to compare to Borneman's book. Tough call.
FWIW I got the frag from Greg Hiller back in May.

Here's a pic of the original frag:

I have this same species of acropora from Greg too. Mine has the exact same growth form, color, although mines tips are just a bit darker, but I don't know what acropora species it is. Eric's book is great, but to try to id acropora from it I'd rather go with Veron's Corals of the World. Still wouldn't be able to id them for sure though.

My guess (and since it is literally impossible to ID staghorn corals (sp acropora):

I'd say it is either A. secale or A. nana.

FWIW, SueT's suggestion is a good one. You should get your hands on Corals of the World - it's just a great book to have.

I've seen that type of acropora sp. (purple tip) from at least 3 different areas with the same growth forms (tonga, fiji, solomans..). I don't personally try to species ID acro anymore, it's a shot in the dark. I find it amusing when people get into arguments about what species sps they have.

I talked to Greg about it. He said he got a frag of that one originally from Inland Aquatics in Indiana long ago. From Larry Jackson (I think that name is correct). It has been fragged many times, and there are a ton of daughter colonies floating around out there. He wouldn't take a stab at the species either.
I guess it'll stay labled as Acropora spp. on my website.

Thanks all.
