In addition to nori, spirulina, flake and the ever popular brine shrimp, what are other greens that are desireable for maintaining the health of tangs. I hear of lettuce, broccoli, zuchinni, but would like to know how these should be prepared and offered. I do soak all my food in selcon as well, but want to offer an optimum diet for a new juvenile purple. Thanks very much for any input.

I microwave a piece of broccoli and place it in the tank once every couple of weeks and remove the stalk the next day. They graze on it all day.
I use spirulina discs also. They fall to the bottom and the tangs enjoy finding them.

Nori and plenty of it will suffice. I'd vary with the occasional mysis shrimp and other foods for a treat - but green seaweed i.e. nori is really all that is needed for a healthy fish.

Lettuce, Broccoli etc are NOT the proper nutrition and are throwbacks that really are not advised. Nori is cheap and readily attainable and the proper diet.

Thanks. I'd heard that "human" veggies were not preferable. Thus far he has chowed down on nori, a meal of brine, and some spirulina flake. I used to use seaweed selects for an angel and will also try this as well.

Broccoli or other human veggies should not be used as a tangs primary food. As stated I use it as it gives the tangs a foraging opportunity now and than.

I feed my Tangs Seaweed Select's green and brown algae sheets on alternate mornings, and San Francisco Bay brand spirulina-enriched brine shrimp cubes every evening. They are all exceptionally healthy, fat and disease free.

You will find the Red Sea Purple Tang loves a meatier diet. Feed something like marine cuisine for starters. My purple was a monster meat AND greens eater. I traded him when I switched tanks as I had to choose between him and my yellow tang.

Thanks Emily! I am a big fan of Marine Cuisine and feed it to both my tanks. That's interesting about purples being eager meat eaters. I've had him two days and he's devoured nori, brine, and spirulina flake. Not at all shy about food. Again, thanks.

I feed my tangs Seaweed Select sheets, spirulina flake, Formula 2, and mysis shrimp. I have read that brine shrimp has almost no nutritional value so I stopped feeding it.

brine shrimp are good if you "gut feed" them for an hour or two first, just put them in a container with an airstone and some selcon - the shrimp take in the selcon, the fish take in the shrimp - and tangs love the brine shrimp as well.
