I started my tank last Friday with 65 lbs of live rock that I had driven home, hence, I was expecting significant die off. I was hoping to cycle the tank with no fish, just the rock.

Now, I have seen snails, pods, a featherduster and some other stuff moving around in there.

When I test the water, however, I find no ammonia, no nitrites, and minimal nitrates.

Is it possible that my rock had enough bacteria to allow my tank to cycle in only a week?

Yesterday night, I dumped about a tablespoon of flake fishfood into the tank to try to cause a spike. The food was all disintegrated by last night, and the test just now still showed no ammonia or nitrites.

I can't add any fish until after thanksgiving anyway, because I'm going out of town and I can't feed them, but I'm just curious if it's possible that it's already cycled....

Nameless,

Give it time. Yes, it is possible, but I would wait and test again in a week, and again in two weeks before adding livestock.

The cycle may be started, but it may not be in equalibrium yet.
