Is anyone keeping Millepora, aka "fire coral" in their tank? Do LFS sell this coral and if so, where? How hard is it to keep? I don't see any for sale or showcased.

Millepora is a Genus of SPS, not one species. If you are referring to the Firecoral commonly found in the Carribean... I know many people that keep it, I myself do not. It does well in any Acro tank. Actually quite a forgiving coral.
Millepora's in general tend to do well in captive systems that are well maintained. I personally think they are a little more delicate than most SPS. I've had a couple in my tank that are doing OK.

Ive got a piece that has been doing great. I bought it here in NY. Kinda neat stuff when it grows because it looks like its poured over the rock on the bottom. Not very colorful though.

I had the understanding that Fire Coral was actually a hydrozoan and not an SPS. There is a Acropora millepora that is unrelated. For Fire Coral Millepora is actually the genus. I have some and it wakes you up if you acidently brush against it. Feels more like a bee sting than fire though...

also note that fire coral can and will over grow many other slowe growing sps....it is a very fast grower once acclimated.

Pathos- How is Aquarium Concepts? I've heard it's quite big, but I've not heard anything on the quaility of merchandise.

i am keeping a millepora frag that i purchased from aquarium concepts in hayward, ca. It is doing well placed on the highest shelf in my reef. i'm sure you already know that it packs a powerful sting and should be handled with care. mine is brilliant yellow and growing in long fingers.

I got a piece from gulf-view.com . I have to be very careful when cleaning the glass on that tank, I have brushed against it a couple of times - so I know it really is fire coral. The darker coloration on the piece I have is what I see at about 60' of depth although Dale says he collects it at about 30-40 feet.

I have one that is slowly engulfing a very nice green pavona. It has been on the coral for years (2) and only recently has started growing when I upgraded to a 120 and added more light. I hate it and would love to find a way to prevent it from doing any more damage to the pavona.

aquarium concepts was a pretty good LFS. I have only been there once and was told that I arrived on a bad day as the corals were pretty picked over. IMO it was very pricey, but they did have several small rose bubble anemones for $125 ea

and it was neat to see a couple of different mantis shrimps. i picked up the fire coral frag for $25 though - which i thought was pretty good. they have an amazing display reef that is to die for. loads of hardware, lighting, filters, etc. as well. i hear they're moving to a new location either this month or next. IMO nice shop - a bit pricey.

Yup, definitely a hydrozoan, not an sps. I had some growing on the base of an acro for a very long time until it decided to start encrusting the living acro tissue. Half a tube of epoxy later the acro looks like its in a cast and the fire coral is no where to be found...

Where can I get this coral? What is the most colorful type by name? Does anyone want to sell or trade me some? How aggressive is it? What can you tell me about the sting? What kind of poison? Similar to jellyfish? Possible allergy reactions or dangers? I'm a scuba diver and I want to become familiar with this coral and I also feel that it would be somewhat respectful to house a coral that I have to be careful with to remind me on the importance of what we're doing.

I ended up getting some from FFExpress - very nice specimens... they are obviously captive bred and humorously enough, they are growing on some sort of "aragocrete" cast rock with a long handle underneath so they can be moved without touching the live coral part.. hehe
