RO/DI system info needed ????

RO is good for drink, good for reef. 1 year is pretty good for replacing membranes, but the best way to tell when to replace them is with a TDS meter (total dissolved solids). It's tough to tell whether a DI column set up after the RO would be worthwhile or not without a TDS reading. You can simply place a tapwater purifier after the RO unit to make it RO/DI and the TWP will last a long time in that capacity.

as far as drinking water, RO/DI works. some people skip the DI stage for drinking.

I just called marine ecosystems and they told me the opposite of what your saying. They said that the RO water is what you don't wany to drink, not the DI. I'm looking for a RO/DI system myself and am getting conflicting info. Does anyone else have any input on this?

Shame on the salesman. Its hard to believe he don't know better. RO water is good to drink!!!!!. Before it was a reef thing ,it was a drinking thing, and still is.

Believe it or not a RO unit maker told me this a long time ago

It had to do witht he fact the water could kill the fauna in your throat

some people i know have had the problem before
with sore throats

so I always tell folks not to drink it

I was always under the impression ro water needed electrolytes added to it or something like that

this was also about 7 years ago too
so..............

Hello, every one.
I have a 75 gallons reef tank. I have well water where I am at, so I rented an RO system for $19.00 a month. I am using it for drinking water and for my reef tank. Is that good enough for my tank ? The company that rented me the system, said they only need to change the filter once a year. If any one has more info about the RO or RO/DI system, please let me know. If I have the RO/DI system hook up. Is that good for drinking water ?

Because I have high nitrates in my well water (28ppm). I have for years only drank from the output of my RO unit. I however recently had my RO output tested and found that I have 4.7 ppm nitrate coming from it. I then added a DI for my reef, but Per the DI manufacturers directions I do not drink the DI. I personally like the taste of the RO and do not have any health problems.

How could RO be worse than the water as it comes out of the tap?? You can drink RO/DI water, but IMO, it's a bit overkill. Some people bypass the DI stage for drinking water for that reason. It's not meant to be a biological filter--it wasn't meant for filtering water coming out a nasty florida ditch full of rotting carcasses.

I'll continue to drink RO/DI. I think the tapwater is affecting the salesman's brain.

I don't see how ro water can kill much more fauna in your mouth than chlorinated tap water could. I thought DI wasn't safe to drink! RO is definitely safe its the post DI that scares me but that thought could be unfounded.

First of all, the consumer DRINKING ro units do use copper and a canister filter, and you do have to take fluride and some trace elements that the RO membrane takes out. But every ro system on the market says for human consumption! If your unit dosent say that, its not even safe for your fish. Do you think that boiling or freezing lettuce given to tangs is done just for fun?!?

I have been drinking RO water since i was born! Most major water supplyers, ie aquafina, uses ro, all of the water you see in jugs from stores and that sit on coolers use RO! WTF is wrong with that GD salesman?!?

Jesus, theres commercials in MI that say, "please dont drink the tap while pregnant because of the high pollutants"

and in pittsburgh, pa, the copper is so high that you will kill your inverts just by suggesting tap. Also, chlorine kills organisms, not RO, thats why they add it to pools and drinking water, to kill bacteria and algae!

Hehe I feel better now. But there should be no more discussion on whether RO water is "drinkable" talk to a SEARS guy, they sell the units

Ok, this is where it started to get confused. I thought the only reason I hook up un RO unit is for drinking; and since it is there, I am going to use it for my tank too. But now I heard some people said RO water is not for drinking. Than what is the use of having an RO unit in your house ? A lot of groceries store sales RO water, and it said RO water should be safe for mixing baby formula, drinking, cooking etc.

Waiting to hear more on this subject.

The instructions that came with my Kent Hi-S Maxxima RO/DI say don't drink it.
