In general, I would say that drilled tanks are better because they do not require maintaining a siphon to keep from overflowing.

Drilled, hands down. Not even a moments thought to some POS hang on the back piece of acrylic.

I forgot to say why:

1. Overflow boxes can loose siphon, which will cause an overflow eventually. It happened to me! Mine ran fine for like 18 months and then on day BAM, out of the blue, 10 gal of water on the floor, lost most the caulerpa in the sump.
2. It looks much better
3. Starting the siphon is a pain in the butt! You don't have that with a drilled tank.
4. You can make a durso standpipe for the the drilled overflows, which is much quieter than the normal overflow boxes which many times are too small for the durso mod.

I ran a HOB U-tube overflow for 10 years and it NEVER failed once.......I always thought it would but it never did
