my hood is 12" high and the vho's are on the same plane as the mh is. It's probably a better idea to stand them off closer but i'll see how things are going. i can see growth on my one month old frags so i'll wait and see.
i should have used a triton reflector, after all it doulbles the light output, or so they advertise.

Just checked mine, VHO and MH are nine and eight inches above the water surface respectively. I couldn't put my VHO on standoffs and be able to clean or work in tank unless I remove the canopy. It's kinda nice not to burn my forearms every time I need to get in there now. I still have scars from my old 65 gallon's lighting setup.

I'm curious, I read the thread on another board polling how high above the water most people have their VHO bulbs. Of the 5 or so people that answered her, consensus was about 4 inches is best.

For all you MH users, who supplement with VHO:
given that most people say to put the MH 8-12" above the water, do you put your VHO supplements on 6 inch standoffs (since the hood is about 12 inches tall)? That seems like it would be a bit awckward. If not, what do you do?

Here's an early picture of my setup. I installed a 2x175w MH with 2x55w PC Actinics in a retrofit setup. I created a 1/2" standoff from the top of the canopy. The lowest part of the MH bulb is approximately 4 inches from the water line. However, I also have a clear piece of glass in between. It works well for me.
