Hi guys.

I found "tank raised blue tangs" in Petco! Does anybody knows how to breed these beautiful fish in the home aquaria? I will like to breed them too. Thank you in advance.

Tank raised and Captive bread are two different things. Tank raised means that the fry were collected from the sea at a very early age, captive bread is when you lock a baggette in the cupboard....... er, no um, Captive bread is when there actually hatched/born and raised in a captive system.

Aquaguy,
Mouse is right in his definitions but several on-line companies and lfs mix up the terms alot.I also don't thinka anytime in the future you will see cb tamgs. They go through an extremely long planktonic stage and are very tiny.Waikki aquarium has had yellow tangs breed but I donm't belive they tried to raise the fry.Normal aquaculture foods such as rotifers, copepods and brine shrimp are too big of a food source for tang fry.Soon as aquaculturers can finda small enough food source that is also very nutritious,I think it will be possible to raise tangs commercially. But then you also have the problem that the tangs planktonic stage is very long and for the most part tangs grwo very slow.So I do not think it would be profitable decison for commercial hatcheries to raise tangs.Right now I don't think tangs are over collected .When you do buy a tang ,I would definately buy tank raised and make sure to provide the tang witha proper environment(nutritous food, proper water chemistry, and proper size tank). If you do buy tang and put it in a 55/75 gallon tank;juts know that you will have to upgrade to a bigger tank in the future beacuse like all fish tnags grow but also love alot of swimming room. But most Marine atlas' and books suggest that tangs grow slow ,so you will have soem time(few months to few years ,depending)to upgrade the size of your tank if you have a small tank.By the way you will get alot of different views and opinions about tangs on this board,I think each fish including tangs is different for every keeper. One keeper says they can keep a few tangs in a75 gallon tang while other keeprs say don't keep a tang unless you aheva 300 gallon and others will say not to keep tangs at all.Just use wise judgement and caution when putting tangs in a small tank or putting several tangs together.Sorry for the long psot.
