M59 and M58 are ANSI codes.
M59=Standard US 400-watt Metal Halide.
M58=Standard US 250-watt Metal Halide.

A mogul base is a E39
A European base is a E40

Is a mogul socket m58 or m59? Does it matter what bulb is put into the socket? I am doing a diy 250w setup and I have power getting to the light but the lamp isn't lighting. Any ideas? I am really stumped. TIA

I used to wire my own MH's, I don't know about different mogul bases, but I think that as long as you have contact with the bottom terminal and side, that it shouldn't matter. Are you coming off of 220v or 110v? Do you the correct ballast? I did blow 1 bulb when I was initially hooking things up, and of course it had to be thrown out. There should be a wiring diagram on the ballast setup.
