I was at at my doctors today and the questionaire I filled out asked if I had a salt water aquarium.
I assumed this was with regard to the well known bacterial infections that can occur with keeping aquaria

However the doc mentioned that salt water aquariums produce Ozone , which is a lung irritant, and not so great if you suffer from Asthma.

I have of course heard of ozone sterilizers for use in aquarium, which were popular in the past but did not know that aquariums produced ozone.

Does anyone have any more information?

Cheers

I too would like to know more about the ozone issue, I have never heard of it but we have a asthma sufferer in the house with all my tanks... I look forward to see what comes up.

I don't have any concrete evidence either way, but I'd be willing to bet that the questionaire is based on the outdated assumption that all SW tanks are running ozone generators.

HI Chucker,

Yes that was my first though also, that it was due to the use ozone generators in filter systems. If salt water tanks produce ozone then why not fresh water also? The ozone point in the paper work I filled out was with specific reference to salt water and not just any aquarium...

Does anyone else have information??

Tanks themselves produce no ozone. When ozone hits seawater, it is destroyed.

As mentioned, some use ozone, so of course it is produced there.

Ultraviolet light sources can produce ozone. So UV sterilizers out in the air can (before they burn up

Some lighting setups may also produce enough UV to generate some ozone.

Personally, I'd be more worried about the methyl iodide coming off the water.....
