My wavemaker has the option to decrease the current at night. Just wondering what everybody does. Right now I just keep the same flow pattern 24 hours a day. Any advantage to decreasing flow at night? Is the ocean calmer at night?

I leave it on all night, doesn't really make sense to me that currents would decrease at night but maybe i'm wrong.

The reef tends to be calmer at night. This is mostly due to wind/water interaction that is driven by the sun and heat during the day. Changing up the currents gives your corals a better simulation of the actual reef.

Calmer reefs at night have been my experience when diving and snorkeling as well.

I have my wavemaker on a timer that shuts it off from around 1AM to 7AM to simulate a calmer water condition. Since I use seaswirls on my returns, there is still some wave action going on when this occurs. I think that it is useful to change the dynamic of the tank at times to better simulate an actual reef.
