I've been talking with an employee at Home Depot in Raleigh NC(the Capital Blvd store) they are deciding if they should start stocking SD. If you would like some SD then contact Terry Holder in pro-sales at 919-878-8771. He has been very helpful in my order with them. So if you've been wanting some SD, give him a call. Hope this helps...

I got some white sterile play sand from Southern States in Chapel Hill. I bet it is calcareous sand and not silica based.

Just an option.

ddavis4um what is the name of the sand you got form southern states, i work for them and we have some sand that i think that might work, it says on the bag it is safe for terrariums, but is also says it contains small amounts of crystalline silica its about $2.99 a bag? does it sound like what you used?
also how long have you had it in your tank, how deep, and do you think its a good sand?
thanks

I called South Down yesterday, and they said they only have the 40pnd bags not the 50pnd bag like you see at HD. Is that the same sand ?

If you called SD they probably refered you to one of these two companies:

www.esvco.com

or

www.purearagonite.com

both sell aquarium grade aragonite.

I have used both and both are excellent.

www.purearagonite is much finer grains, and a bit brighter. It's also better priced, and they ship all over bags, or pallets. Their product is packaged in 40 lb bags, so I think you spoke to them.

esvoco sells 50 lb buckets.

SD does not recommend usage of their playsand for aquariums.

You can't go wrong with either esvco or pure aragonite.
