Speakers:
Excellent, I only wish I could have attended all of them but I couldn't be in two places at once. Charlie Veron's talk on coral taxonomy was enlightening indeed. I think we are lucky to even get to a genus most of the time =)
Industry Developments:
AMDA and MAC are both moving forward with quite a momentum to work on bringing healthier animals into the hobby while decreasing the already minimal impact this hobby has on the worlds reefs. Yes I said minimal impact, one thing that I gathered from some of the various speakers though I missed Paul Holthus's talk this afternoon, was that when compared to all of the causes of degradation to the world's reefs, the aquarium hobby as a whole is insignificant. HOWEVER that doesn't excuse carelessness. We must do everything we can to increase our successes in captive breeding and in reducing the mortality rate from collection to the hobbyiest because not only must we make ourselves less of a target for politicians we can help repair the damage done by other industries.
Sunlight Supply has entered the reef market with a line of metal halide ballasts. Very nicely made and will likely give PFO a run for it's money.
Julian Sprung's new book Invertebrates is excellent, very similar to "Corals: A Quick Reference Guide" but more detail on various critters that weren't covered in Corals. TLF has also released a powdered phytoplankton similar to ESV's I have some but haven't tried it yet.
I'm sure I have forgot tons of stuff others will probably pick up what I missed....
It was great meeting jamesw, MicroChip, MindEraser, Timbo, Brad Shaw and the other guys from Sunlight Supply, Joy from Harbor, mblade, Brian from Atlantis Aquatics, and many others who I've known for years via the net but only met this weekend.
extra props to timbo for providing comic relief for the rest of us, however the stripper almost beat you!
Many thanks to the Baltimore Aquarium for this morning's "behind the scenes" tour. The following pictures are from that tour.
only so much can be convered in one post, more info will surely trickle out over the next week or so.
