* garlic

* a cleaner shrimp

* hospital tank

* generally, a lower salinity and tons of water movement without dead spots is supposed to minimize ich

In that order perhaps? Not sure.

Freshwater dipping is supposed to be a mixed bag; part shocking the ich off, but part shocking the fish into stress and a lower immune system

You might try soaking some nori in garlic and feeding it to him. Naseco knows a awful lot about these guys.

Go to your local grocery store and look in the spice section for Garlic Juice. I had a minor outbreak on a Orchid Dottyback, and this cleared it up very quickly.

Easiest way to prevent ick is to maintain high water quality. This is not a guarantee of course. Some fish will get ich no matter what you do.

I used to lose tangs and other fish to ich all the time until I learned to quarantine the fish i bought. I go through a certain regimen with all my fish and I haven't lost a specimen in quite a while. These are the steps I go through.

1) Freshwater dip the fish for up to 5 minutes. I usally add methylene blue to the water. I may use saltwater w/ methylene blue if I think the fish may have problems with a freshwater dip.

2) Quarantine for 4 weeks in HYPOSALINE water (1.010 or 16ppt). I feel this step really helps keep the ich away. Currently my quarantine system is a standard 55 gallon glass tank.

3) During the quarantine period, I feed antibacterial flake food along with typical regimen of meaty foods, formula foods, etc. For the herbivores, especially the tangs, I find that it is neccessary to bulk them up as quick as possible using nori that I buy at the local ethnic markets (I have six mega-sized ethnic markets in the town I live).

By the end of the quarantine period, the fish is usually very well-adjusted, fat and ready to go into one of my many tanks. I've had good success with some "difficult" species like Acanthurus achilles and Acanthurus leucosteron on my first try!

Quarantine all your fish before you add them to the tank.

When my tank was more crowded I used to get Ich on the Tangs a lot. I've found Cleaner shrimp work great, as well as soaking foods with Selcon. I used to feed them lots of dry Seaweeds, and would ritualy let them soak overnight in Selcon. Hehe, I would actually pride myself on getting a good "Candy Coating" on the Algae before feeding it. I would simply clip a few pieces in an Algae Clip at night, and then liberally apply Selcon on it in a dish. Flip once or twice to make sure you get both sides. I would let that sit out overnight. On my way out the door to work, I'd toss the clip in. By the time I got home it was usually empty, and I had 3 very fat and happy Tangs. No Ich, hardly ever a fight. Now I only have one Tang, and a couple clowns in my 90, and I haven't seen Ich since I moved 8-9 months ago.

3 Tangs in a 90, now thats responsible fishkeeping. I guess the closest to being quarantined was down at the LFS too.

Oh BTW, a 90's too small for one Tang. They shoudln't IMO be in anything under 150G. Just in case you feel like "re-stocking" your tank <read abertoir>
