You do not say if the tank is glass or acrylic. if it is acrylic, you need some kind of top to keep it from bending and bowing. You might want to have a plastics shop put a clear one on for you.

Do you know the history of the tank you recieved? It it was a FO tank you should be careful, if they ever used copper meds in the tank it might ruin your chances of ever establishing a reef tank.
Good luck, though (I wish I could inherit a 180!)

I have inherited a 180-gallon tank, 2'x2'x6'. I want to do a reef tank with it, but am not sure if it will work because the top of the tank is black plexiglass. There are two openings for light that are 2'x 6". Before I start worrying about all of the other equipment, I want to make sure that I can get enough light into the tank to keep the animals happy and healthy! Will it work? Do I need to reengineer the tank and replace the top?
