Jim:
< Just a few quick questions. What is your dosing procedure, and what test kit(s) do you use to determine if your dose is correct? >
I add NaI to the equivalent of 0.02 ppm of I- once or twice per week. That brings it up to the NSW level of iodide (0.02 ppm or so) once or twice per week, and then it drops as it will between dosings.
A few years ago I did a substantial number of tests on my tank in conjunction with several other reefkeepers on Fishnet at the time, and in conjunction with Habib of
Salifert and Leo Morin of Seachem. We monitored both iodide and iodate.
In all cases, we found that easily measured levels (such as 0.06 to 0.10 ppm) of I- dropped to undetectable (say, 0.03 ppm or less) in 1-3 days. Also, a dosing scheme that I used of 0.06 ppm equivalent of I- 1-3 times per week never resulted in a buildup of I-. Iodate is another story as it does sometimes accumulate and should not be used, IMO.
Consequently, I conclude that my tank uses iodide at a rate substantially higher than my current dosing scheme. It is for that reason that I do not worry about accumulation of I-, and do not routinely measure it.
