The issues is not whether Rios are good pumps or not, just whether the Venturi attachment can work better.

It has that ball thing vavle on the end of the tube that connects to the nozzle when attached to skimmers. If I remove it, what are the implications? Will it skim better? Will it fill up with salt creep every two days in the sump and quit working?

If you have any knowledge of the above, please let me know.

Thanks,
Brian

Shouldn't matter one way or another. The attachemnt is just that, a ball valve. All it does is flow control. There is a small venturi hole on it, but if you pressurize the discharge, you'll only have water squirting out the hole, not drawing air. Just leave it alone, it's just there to provide the proper connection to your skimmer intake.

I'm not sure exactly what you guys are talking about. There is no ball valve on the venturi inlet tube. There is an air valve that you screw in and out to adjust air flow but that's not on the end. What is on the end is an acorn-shaped muffler. I would imageine it may increase the airflow somewhat to remove it. It will also make it louder. Take it off and try it out as it's easy to put back on. My opinions only.

I took mine off thinking the same thing. It was louder but it did put more bubbles into the chamber. But after a little tinkering I got more consistent foam by puting it back on and tightening the screw down a bit.

The ball thing at the end of the tube is a silencer. If you take it apart (yeah, I don't think there is anything I have NOT tear apart yet in my tank...), you will find a small sponge inside the silencer.

If you don't mind a little bubbly sound, go ahead and take it off. More air will be allowed into the tube and which means more air for your skimmer.

BTW, I believe for the Rio's, there are 2 ways you can use the venturi attachment, before the pump or after the pump. Depend on the model the venturi is supplied with, most can go either way.....unless I was mismatching different venturi attachment before? I would suggest put the venturi attachment BEFORE the pump to chop up air into small bubbles as much as possible. Eventhough this may shorten the life of the pump, because air may become trapped in the impeller housing and sometimes Rio will stop suction because of it. Just my personal experiences.

Glenn, what screw are you talking about?
You mean the acorn part not attached to the tube?

No. Inline on the hose, there should be a plastic valve with a screw. Clockwise decreases air through the tube. Counterclockwise increases airflow. I think.

They may not all come with that valve. I don't know.

Okay. I'm using an in-sump CPR something or other for a 40 gallon tank. The rio sits at the bottom. As far as I can tell, it just has a black tube with the acorn on the end that connects to the impeller part. I don't see any screws per se.

I have 2 CPRs and I don't have a valve control for the air flow either. In the past I have taken off the air filter/muffler/decrative end piece but have always put it back due to noise. The biggest issues I've had with the Rio is clogging of the intake with valonia. For some reason it loves to grow on and around my Rio. The rest of the tank is reletivly free of it. Go figure.
