Well, we'll see if I got him! I had a HUGE aiptasia in my display tank. Just one, but he was HUGE. He originally was on the underside of a large rock and a few weeks ago had moved a little more into the light at the back of the rocks. Since moving, he'd grown really big. Fully extended, his tentacles spanned about 2 inches, his stalk was about 1/4" wide and over an inch long.

I got to looking and figured out a way to get to him with a kalk syringe. I blasted him with about 2.5 mL of a very strong kalk mixture. INSTANT MELTDOWN! He disintegrated, kind of like the Wicked Witch of the West! All the fish promptly went into a feeding frenzy, eating the pieces of the anemone that started floating around the tank. Where the anemone was looks now about like a nuclear meltdown site.

I guess I'll soon know if I got him good enough to be rid of him. He he! Felt pretty good actually. (My sinister self now...)

Hey James, Do you think the Kalk syringe trick would work on Anemonia? I have quite a number of them, even though most is not in close proximity of major corals, but its annoying to see them in my tank, fearing one day they will decide to move and sting my prize collection. Since the kalk syringe trip would work well with aipt's, shouldn't it work for anemonia too?

If you unfortunately have anemonia in your tank too, can you try and let me know the result? (

I would love to have your tank as guinny pigs.

)

LOL, danmhippo. Luckily, no aneomonia here. I think there was a thread on it recently, though, something like "Can someone ID this anemone" or something. I know that's not very helpful as far as finding the thread, but it turned out that it was anemonia and there was a good disucssion of how to get rid of it. I'm not sure if kalk works with those guys or not.

My vote goes on the favor of the Aiptasia..
We did the same with ours.. fishes were all around, eating.. but it looked like they were eating the kalkwasser paste. 2 weeks later they ALL came back. One even found a way to double itself in the process..

I wish you more luck then we had.
Only one we got rid of had been plugged in with epoxy before, and had found its way out of it but was weaker.. the kalkwasser finished it.. All others came back

Problem is he may hit you with a heap of fresh reserves late in the game to overwhelm you at the whistle.....this is a tenacious opponent you know !

LOL, gazpep! So far, so good. Not a trace of him this afternoon. Hopefully he didn't retreat in order to create some new reserves...

Just so you know, the kalk paste trick seems to have worked for anemonia. I applied to 10 of them in my tank. So far so good. Hopefully, I won't see them anymore. Let's keep the fingers crossed.

I have been doing battle with a mantis shrimp recently and tried zapping it with a piece of speaker wire and a 9 volt battery ( I knew the hole it lived in). It definitly is a sure fire way to get it out ouf the rock, but didn't do him in though. If only I can figure out how to catch it when it comes shooting out!
I tried the same trick on a aiptasia yesterday, and it sure put a hurting on it. It is really withered and hopefully on it's way out...time will tell.

Their is a nudibranch called Burgea. Something like that. It eats apitasia.

I see you have already tried it so you may not need any more input. I have had luck with my modified kalk method and Anemonia. I use boiling water to make my kalk paste, and actually injected it into the Anemonia with a needle. Worked 100% for me!

OK--A quick update. I DIDN'T get him the first time. He sure looked sad, but wasn't dead.

Last night, I was looking around in the refugium and, lo and behold, there he was, looking as good as ever. These buggers sure can regenerate fast. Apparently he'd let go of the rock he was on when I blasted him with kalk, floated around and found his way into the overflow and ended up in the refugium.

Lucky for me, he'd attached himself to the side of the refugium right up near the top, to get the light. I was able to work him off the side with a kitchen utensil. I'm pretty sure I managed to get him to release his foot and that I didn't leave any traces of tissue behind--at least that's what it looked like. It's amazing how small he got--he went from 1 1/2" long and tentacles extended 2" in diameter to about the size of an English pea.

He's now floating around in the Dallas sewer system somewhere. I don't suspect he'll make his way back into my tank any time soon.

Good for you deets - at first I laughed when I read about the kalk - I killed a few that way, but some took a couple doses. After the first dose, they grew back all mangled and deformed. I kinda felt bad - then I zapped them again.
