LOL, tangirl would have fun with that one..

Just have the standard bowfront stand with the wood slats so Mitch is making this to match.

It WILL be very heavy, fortunately we have access to the floor joists above, so it will hang as well.

Any suggestions what to paint the inside with, just plain white ? Had aluminum flashing on the old one, but hate to add the extra weight, and don't know if I need it with those nice reflectors...

can you email me the specs/measurements on this hood ? I am considering a bowfront but the lack of good comercial hoods has stopped me so far. i have a friend who is a cabinent maker and Im sure he could build me one with your specs.

What size bow tank is that for, is that a 155? I cant accurately judge the size from the photo. That is going to look steller. Also tell us a bit about the people you commissioned to build it. There was a thread the other day for canopies for 46g bows (which affects me). Help us other bow tank owner out (I hate to ask how much it cost, or how much that would cost for a 46g, but also how long it took). I'm not sure if I trust myself to build it. Heres my big question, what do you use to stain the wood to protect it from the salt???

Thanks, I've never built one of these before, and it WAS fun to build. All i did was take a template of the front bow on Deb's aquarium and transfer that to two 2 x 10 pieces of lumber, one for the top and one for the bottom. I lined the inside with 3/8" birch ply, so no light shone through. The two front braces are there for stability of the bottom piece. I'm laminating some plywood right now on a form that will make up the front doors. I also put a 1/2" rabbet around the inside, so that it can fit on top of the aquarium, hopefully preventing light from escaping there. Height overall is 16 1/2" and the depth Is about 1 1/2 " more than Deb's aquarium, to accomodate for plumbing. I still have to cut fan holes, and I think they're going to be on the sides. We're still deciding that.
The material it's made of is pine, with birch ply. Material cost was around $225 - $250.
Because I've never built one of these before, it took WAY longer than it should have, and since Deb and I trade things quite a lot, (and she always gives me beer whenever I'm over there

) I gave her a break on the labour. If I was to make another one, I'd probably charge around $700 - $900.
As for time to build, it's hard to say, as I did it in my spare time. If I had to guess, and if you had all the materials on hand, and with gluing and clamping times, it should only be a few days.

Deb, I keep forgetting, it IS a 155g, isn't it?

Oh, and for the finish, it's getting 2 coats of primer, and 2 coats of marine paint, but Deb's hubby is taking care of that. (They've got a heated garage)
