I've got a bak pak II on my 29g with the original Rio on it. Seems just about right for this size tank. I imagine that giving it a boost for a larger tank, such as your 55g, would be a good idea.

J Crew- I threw a Maxijet in my MRT (acrylic tank with an integral BakPak), and found that the venturi attachment wouldn't fit in the space provided. I just stuck the end of the airline tube directly into the powerhead intake, and it actually works fairly well.

What chucker did actually works better then the venturi they sell for the MJ. The stock venturi is too far from the pump intake and doesn't generate enough suction, and tends to go "chug chug". I went a step further than chucker, I glued an airline connector into one of the slots on the bottom of the pump since my hot-1 pump is in the tank.. I wanted something that would stay put. Works good, and no more constantly changing water level like you can get with rios. I wish aq. systems would make a better venturi for the pump themselves.

Do you guys have any pics of that? (the airline connector in the slot) Ive got the 1200 with turbo venturi on my PM HOT-1 and it defintely makes the glug glug sound on the venturi as someone stated.

thanks for the info. so the turbo venturi makes an annoying noise huh? do you happen to have a pic or diagram of that setup Jeremy? thanks for the replies everyone, peace

It's not that the noise is annoying.. it goes "chug chug" because it doesn't have enough suction the way the venturi is setup to generate constant air intake.. the chug noise is the pump/venturi cycling between sucking air and not sucking air which isn't the desired effect most people are looking for with a venturi skimmer.

I'll take a photo tomorrow at work if you really want, but making a better venturi until aq. systems does is as simple as gluing a standard airline connecter into the bottom of the pump and hooking an airline on it.

If you don't want to mess with changing the intake just put a screw type air valve on the end of the air line and that should clear up the chugging. You can adjust how much air comes in and tune it where you like.

alright i have the cpr bak pak II and was thinking about upgrading the powerhead to the maxijet 1200 (or 900 if that would be better) and getting the turbo venturi kit as seen here: http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PA&Product_Code=MJ-VENT&Category_Code=Maxijet
i haven't used the powerhead that comes with this cpr since i haven't set up my tank yet... but have heard and read that it's worth on upgrade. just want to get a concensus before i order it.
btw, i'm almost done getting everything up and running. i've got a 55gal and my stand and canopy are completely stained and coated with polyurethane. i have my 440w of vho's mounted in the canopy from lampsnow.com. i have my cpr bakpak II skimmer ready (except for upgrade), and i'm ordering the tornado 50gpd reefpure RO/DI unit today. all i need once this comes in and i get my tank filled is to order some sand and my uncured fiji LR from premiumaquatics and let that cure. then add in some LS and damn i think i'll be rollin. i'm so stoked! thanks for any info you can provide on the maxijet upgrade, peace

J Crew,
I have replaced the Rio's with MJ 1200's on 3 different skimmers; a Knop and the Remora that replaced it on my 55 reef; and a BakPak2R on the 38 FOWLR. Each ran much more efficiently and quieter than the Rios. I might add that each replacement was primarily because each of the Rio's quit within 3-8 months.
I used the Venturi Kit from Premium Aquatics on the Knop and the Bak Pak (the Remora doesn't use a venturi with the pump). The kit does have an adjustable air vent on the end of the airline. It is quiet and there's no chug-chug.
I would recommend going ahead and getting the MJ1200 and installing it, keeping the RIO as a backup in case something happened to the MJ(unlikely to fail).
HTH,
Dick

I bought a MJ1200 thinking of replacing the RIO800 on my PM HOT-1 skimmer. I haven't replaced it as of yet mostly because I needed more flow in the tank anyway so I put it to use. I was wondering how you hook it up to the PM HOT-1? the rio is just jammed into the intake of the plumbing, but it seems the MJ would be sideways. Do you have a pic of the setup? THx, Rich

Yes, you can use that little air valve thing to cut the air back and get rid of the chug chug, but if you do your own mod you get MORE air and it works even better as far as skimming goes..

As far as how you hook it up to the hot-1, you just stick the output in the same place the rio is jammed in, the pump intake will be horizontal, but it is on the rio also... so it's really no different.

that's a good idea... have you actually done this yourself? were you satisfied? thanks
