I have a small 5 gallon tank that I plan to use for dwarf seahorses. However, this small acrylic tank has a black plastic base glued to the bottom. I would like to remove this base so that the tank can fit on my shelf. How do I go about removing this base? The way the base is set, it is far enough away from corners and where the base is sealed to the sides that removing the base will have NO effect on the aquarium. How do I remove this piece? Help!

Thanks,

Cliff

I think you are going to have to cut it off. I don't know if you can remove a welded piece of acrylic from another one. Best bet is to cut it very slowly, but even that could cause vibrations that would loosen the seals on the tank. Just my opinion, don't work much with acrylic.

Thanks for responding, Dave. Actually, it appears to be krazy glued or sealed or something, but not welded on. Is there a special remover I should use?

Thanks,

That can be the appearance of the solvent or "weld". I still don't think there is one, but you may want to get in contact with one of the people on this board who build stuff out of acrylic, they would know better than me.

Heh CrGiants,

The black border came off accidently on my old 5 gallon tank while I was cleaning it. Mine was just siliconed on the glass tank(not a good job as it came off so easily). I don't see any problem as long as you leave the top one intact(tank might bow slightly, I'm guessing). I bought my old tank 8 years ago, so I'm not quite sure how solid they are build nowadays(seeing that all new tanks have a center brace on when old ones didn't). Try to carefully pry it off the glass tank with large screw drive, without scratching or damaging tank. Hope this helps and goodluck!
